Oman – Iran Ferry Service

February 3, 2016

oman ferry service

Oman is in the planning stages of introducing a ferry service to Chabahar, Iran.  For some reason this excites me and I hope the service is introduced shortly.

Three hours to Iran without the hassles of air security checks, and the possibility of taking your own car.  What is not to like?

Maybe I should use the National Ferry Service to visit Mussandam first. What do you think?

Salam my friends and I may be going to Oman in July 2017 as part of our gap year. We are hoping to go to Iran from Oman, so do you know if the ferry will be in service around that time? thank you

      Hi Amirah,
Thanks for your question. This ferry route hasn’t been launched, but a ferry to Bahman Port, Qeshm Island, Iran is being serviced right now from Khasab, Oman in the governorate of Musandam. Confirmation of service here.
So you can, at the moment, reach Iran from Oman. Things to consider:

      1. *Khasab is noncontiguous with other parts of Oman, so you will have to travel through the UAE by land to reach the starting point, or by NFC ferry or Oman Air from Muscat.
      2. *However, Musandam in Oman is good to visit.
      3. *Maybe it’s better to just get a ferry from Dubai or Sharjah?
      4. *You will have to sort another ferry to mainland Iran if you want to travel further.

Sounds like a good trip, your question has sparked my interest and maybe I need to plan a ferry trip to Qeshm Island :)

    Hello,
do you know how i get with my car Jeep fom Oman to Iran by cargo ferry?

      Hi Ursula,
Thanks for the question. There are so many details to cover like if you are importing or just traveling, what nationality you are…. Here is what I know: The Oman National Ferries Company does not cary vehicles to Iran at the moment, but that might change in the future because I know they are working on it. So, for now you need to drive to Sharjah in the UAE and take a car ferry from there. You can find more details from the Oman Automobile Association who will be the ones you will get your carnet de passage if you are returning to Oman. They should have more details for you, Inshallah.
Let me know how it goes. I really want to go, and would probably take my car there this summer, but being an American I am now banned from Iran.

        Hi, Micheal

Any update about the ferry and shipping a car the to Iran with NFC. My plan is to go there with my car for a week and back to Oman.

        Thank you

        Majid

Majid, still car ferry service to Iran from Oman. You can go from Sharja though. You will also need a carnet de passage. You can do that via the Oman Automibile Association. Good luck.

What’s the cost difference, NFC khasab Muscat ferry seems to be about $5 but UAE iran ferry about $90. Any idea of cost via Qeshm. As extra is it just yanks banned or English too?

Hi Simon, your questions are not 100% clear to me, sorry. I’ll try my best. There are no $5 NFC fares to anyplace, you can find the fares and schedules at the Oman National Ferries Company website. I don’t know anything about ferries from UAE to Iran. NFC charges return fare to Bandar Abbas/Qeshm at 60/45 OMR from Khasab. Americans and Britons (as well as Canadians) are not banned from visiting Iran, they are just required to get special permission and jump through a few more hoops than citizens of other nations. Basically you need to hire a local tour company to host you, and issue you a letter of invitation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Specifically for Americans, Iran is taking “reciprocal action” in response to Executive Order 13780. There are reports Iran is denying some visas for Americans. I expect “reciprocal action” to cease when the period for Executive Order 13780 concludes. Finally, if you reside in the UAE it may be easier to omit the Omani border crossing into Mussandam and just take a ferry from there.

Hi, thanks for info , I got the $5 fare from directferries.co.uk (actually listed at a hefty £2.79) . Just have a one way ticket to Dubai at moment…

You are welcome. Good luck with your journey. It sounds amazing, and I’d love to hear about it when you return. So, please let me know how it goes.

Hello, do you know how to get now from Iran to Musandam and back? The ferry that went once between Qeshm and Khasab doesnt exist any more, as far as i can see. Thanks for your help!

    • Reply D. Michael March 31, 2018 at 2200

Oh wow. I looked and NFC dropped this service from their schedule. They did it quietly. I can’t imagine there was many passengers. Moving forward there is no other ferry service between these two countries. I know there is ferry service between Bandar Abbas and Sharjah, UAE. Look for that.

    Hi D. Michale,

This October/November I’d lioke to visit Iran (again) and then go by ferry to Muscat. Is there a connection between Chabahar and Musctat? I can’t find anythingreliabe online. I’l like to avoid Queshm, been there in April and Kahasab is far form ghe capital plus going through UAM would be a hassle. Maybe a flight if not ferry but ferry would be more fun.

    Any tips most welcome.

    Jay

Hi Jay. Really sorry to find this message in the spam. At the moment there are no more ferries running between Oman and Iran. There was Bandar Abbas and Qeshim service, but that all stopped. I think the service was under utilized so NFC canceled it.

      Salam Nadheer
This ferry service is no longer in operation. Actually Oman has no international ferry service at the moment. You’d have to travel via a ferry from Sharjah to Iran. The Oman Automobile Association can give you the information. I have none other than that. Sorry. Good luck.
