I always wanted to try out a via ferrata, and it finally happened with a visit to Oman’s newest via ferrata at the Alila Jabal Akhdar hotel. A via ferrata is a protected climbing route, and Jebal Akhdar is one of the most beautiful places in Oman. Mix the two together to make a memorable adventure in the mountains.

In this episode of the Sultanate, Jonty and I take you along the via ferrata course at Alila Jabal Akhdar with the help of our guides Majid and Rob. Along the way Majid points out the variety of plants growing on the mountain, and how they are used by the locals. We also learn about the history of the surrounding area before we muscle up the challenging section of the course to take in the spectacular view.

Heading to Jabal Akhdar on Friday–any recommendations for a 2-3 hour hike near Alila?

The Wadi Hijir would be nice in that timeframe and give good views.

is the ferrata accessible to anyone with equipment and experience free of cost? Or is it mandatory to book through the hotel?

Hi Matt, everything must be done through the hotel, so you should contact them directly. I know all their rules have changed and such. However, there is another VF on Jebal Shams that is open for all with your own equipment, if you search around you can find more information about it. Sorry, but it is nothing I have covered on this site.
