One of the greatest things about traveling and living abroad is experiencing the different culture of your host country. Being from California which has a prominent car culture, I was pleased to find a familiar culture here in Oman. What surprised me the most, however, was how car culture mixed with other local cultures to create something different.
Below is my photo series on How to Park Like an Omani Local. I photograph the situations as I come upon them using my mobile phone. This series isn’t about photographic techniques, rather a jovial look at how free locals are to park as they wish, as seen through the eyes of rigid western culture.

I am coming to Oman in January with my wife and toddler and we are renting a car.
Can you give any tips on parking in the centre of Muscat/around the main tourist sites? I was reading that there is pay parking now which you can do via you mobile/cell phone. Is that right and can you do it with a non-Omani sim?

Hi Adrian, The pay areas are indeed enforced, but there are not too many of them. You can always find a free place to park just a bit further if you don’t want to pay. You can always use 50 baisa coins in the machines because I don’t think your foreign sim will work for the SMS system. Enjoy Oman.
